For Peace and Unity
“Eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”
Ephesians 4:3 (ESV)
Unity between Christians, in a church, in a family, in a team, is almost never given automatically. It must be maintained — that is the word Paul uses. Which presupposes an effort, an eager labor that he assumes. Peace is not the absence of differences; it is the patient work of keeping what unites despite what could divide.
A word held back rather than thrown, a forgiveness offered before being asked, a step taken toward the brother rather than a withdrawal into your own wound. It is not comfortable, and that is precisely why it is promised as a work God blesses. To labor for peace is to walk in the footsteps of Christ.
If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.
Romans 12:18 (ESV)
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
Matthew 5:9 (ESV)
Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity!
Psalm 133:1 (ESV)
