Does God Hold the World in His Hand?

“Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand and marked off the heavens with a span, enclosed the dust of the earth in a measure and weighed the mountains in scales and the hills in a balance?”

Isaiah 40:12 (ESV)

You turn on the news and the world looks like chaos — endless wars, climate disruption, fragile economies, tired democracies. The question rises, low and dull: is anyone still at the controls?

Scripture does not promise that everything is going well. It says something else: that the One who measured the oceans still holds things in His hand. The world is more fragile than we thought, but also more carried than we see. You are not responsible for setting history right — you only have to entrust what is beyond you to the One who has never been overwhelmed. Peace is not in mastering the news: it is in knowing the One who stands above it.

And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

Colossians 1:17 (ESV)

The earth is the LORD's and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein.

Psalm 24:1 (ESV)

For in him we live and move and have our being.

Acts 17:28 (ESV)
