Against Temptation
“No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.”
1 Corinthians 10:13 (ESV)
Temptations are as old as humanity. The lie they whisper to you: you are alone, you will not make it, it is stronger than you, you may as well give in. Paul dismantles this lie in three steps. First, no temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man — you are not a special case, others have crossed the same.
Then, God is faithful, he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability — He knows your limits better than you do. Finally, he will also provide the way of escape — there is a door, sometimes hidden, but real. Look for it. It is there.
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.
Hebrews 4:15 (ESV)
Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.
James 1:12 (ESV)
Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.
Matthew 26:41 (ESV)
