Jesus does not say “blessed are the peaceful,” those who avoid conflict and make no waves. He says “blessed are the peacemakers” — those who make peace, actively, where it is missing.
Making peace is work. It calls for stepping forward, speaking, sometimes carrying a wrong you did not commit. It is not the posture of the spectator, but of the laborer.
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.”
Matthew 5:9
And the reward is striking: “they shall be called sons of God.” Why? Because in making peace, they do what the Father did in Christ. Children are known by their likeness to the Father.
In your family, your church, your neighborhood: there is always torn cloth to be mended. It is not glorious, it is patient. But it is there, exactly there, that one glimpses whose child you are.
