Here is a strikingly realistic promise. Paul does not say “live at peace with everyone,” full stop. He sets two honest limits: “if possible” and “so far as it depends on you.”
It is a release. Peace is made by two; you are responsible only for your half of the bridge. If the other refuses to lay his stones, you have not failed — you have done your part.
“If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.”
Romans 12:18
This frees us from a false burden: believing we must, at all costs, repair every relationship. No. You must hold out your hand, speak truly, not nurse resentment. The other’s response is not yours to own.
Walk your stretch of the road toward him — sincerely, to the end of your part. And the rest, leave to God. You can have a clear conscience even when the relationship is not yet at peace.
