Notice what the Word is not: a floodlight drowning the whole horizon. It is a lamp — to my feet. It lights the next step, not the next ten miles.
This may disappoint the one who wants to see everything in advance. But it is grace: if you saw the whole road, you would no longer need to walk with him. The lamp keeps you close to the bearer of the light.
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
Psalm 119:105
In the psalmist’s day, one walked at night with a small oil lamp tied near the foot. It showed only the next step — but that was enough not to fall.
You do not need to know your whole life tonight. You need enough light for the next step. Open the Word: it lights just what is needed.
